“Tell me you’re joking,” she whispered, her voice barely audible over the sound of the falling rain. Her trembling fingers clutched his hand like it was the only thing holding her world together. Her wide, wet eyes searched his face desperately for a flicker of denial, a shred of warmth, something that would tell her this wasn’t real.

But he stood there like stone.
